Sponsors (Godparents)

You may have one male and one female Godparent. They must be 16 years or older and  baptized Christians. At least 1 must be a Confirmed Catholic. A baptized non-Catholic is technically a Christian witness.

CIC 872 Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor…. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it. [They should lead] a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on

If a Godparent is unable to attend the baptism ceremony, they can still be the Godparent, and someone can stand in their place as a proxy.
